Swimming: 26 Lengths Front Crawl

Me, Rafe, Mum and Dad all went swimming yesterday. After a few games of ball, I went into the lanes to do some big lengths. The most I’d ever done before on any stroke (switching from length to length) was 16. The most I’d ever done on my front was about 4 :D
But, just a few weeks ago- I’d improved my front crawl by always breathing to the same side. It’s easier and stops you from needing to hold your breath for so long. And doing my new improved stroke, I managed to swim 26 Lengths of Front Crawl!!
And the lovely thing was, when Dad started to cheer me on,  some other random strangers came over and clapped me and said that I should be proud :D

What’s the best amount of lengths you’ve ever done. With or without stopping?

And. What’s your best stroke?

  1. Well done! It took me ages to build up to swimming lots of lengths — I didn’t learn how to swim properly till I was in my early twenties.

For your poll, I think you should add the option “1-2 miles” because whilst I’ve previously swum almost 2 miles (so more than a mile!) I wouldn’t call it “many miles”!

  2. In Australia, we call it Freestyle or “The Aussie Crawl”. I used to swim a lot when I was at school but it wasn’t until someone explained the breathing to me that it became easier. I found breathing on both sides to be better as it is more balanced for your muscles as they develop from your exercise. Next time you swim notice the difference in the strength of the stroke that you breath on to, the one you don’t. You exert more energy on the side you breath on because you need more strength to get your head out of the water. I used to know a girl at school. She was a fantastic swimmer but she was teased because one breast was bigger than the other. Why? Because she only breathed on one side. Try 3 strokes then breath. This way your breathing side will alternate. Concentrate on blowing bubbles as you breath and just relax…the speed will come later. Watch your bubbles and count your threes. Very soon you will be able to swim as many laps as you like! Let me know if this works for you!
