Now, a few days ago, I decided to make a Villanelle for my Poetry project. I’m telling you now, they’re not easy!
If you decide to make one, here are my instructions:
The first line of each stanza must rhyme with the third line of each stanza. Those two lines must rhyme with the with the first and third lines of each other stanza in the villanelle. The second line of the first stanza must rhyme with the second line of each other stanza in the poem. Also, the first line must be repeated on lines 6, 12 and 18. The third line must be repeated on lines 9,15 and 19. Easy, Huh! Another thing you might notice is that the last stanza has 4 lines, instead of 3, like the others. This stanza works the same as the triplets, except from that there is a line added onto the end. This is a copy of line 3, and must rhyme with the first and third line of its stanza.
Wondrous Stars (By George)
Like pearls on the galaxy’s pelt of lace
Like sparkling swans flying high
Like burning torches in the dark void of space
Lurking in the shadow, the masters of grace
You sit so far out of reach. Why?
Like pearls on the galaxy’s pelt of lace
To my eye you’re but a zag on the sky’s face
Shooting star, I wish only you were not so shy
Like burning torches in the dark void of space
Making the purple fields a wondrous place
Golden rain falling from the sky
Like pearls on the galaxy’s pelt of lace
What noise do you make? Like Cymbal? Like Bass?
Do you talk? Do you laugh? Do you, like me, sigh?
Like burning torches in the dark void of space
The study of astrology is such a beautiful case
Maybe one day you’ll visit… when you’re passing by?
Like pearls on the galaxy’s pelt of lace…
Like burning torches in the dark void of space.
You inspired me to write my own villanelle … take a look! http://jrosenberry1.wordpress.com/2013/01/20/the-staircase-a-villanelle/ It was tough in some ways, but in some ways it was like the poem “completed itself” because of the repeated lines. Does this make sense? Anyway, thank you for your inspiration!
You’re very welcome! Glad that I inspired you to write a villanelle yourself!
And yes, it does make sense. And I agree, It was extremely hard!
I love your poem, by the way! Really effective, and great use of language! I really like “The ornaments of bold youth fall away!”… really cool!
Thank you! BTW — you should check out the web site I got the images from — it’s on Facebook — “Abandoned Asylums” — some of their images are just screaming, “write about me! write about me!” There’s also a good page about Chernobyl — the Ukrainian page. As well as the pretty-nature-pages too.
Keep writing —
BTW — love the Lego items too. My son and I adore Lego. In fact, I adore Lego more so than he does at this point!
You’re very welcome!
And haha!
Who doesn’t like LEGO, huh!
(BTW: I’ll check out that “Abandoned Asylums later!
)
Looks like quite a challenge, which you met admirably! I’m inspired to give it a shot! I like your line ” pearls on the galaxy’s pelt of lace ” – very nice!
Thanks!
good write-up
Thanks nightlake! Have you written any Villanelles before?
Nope, George. I have not..
Wow; I thought you’d tried every form of poetry- I’m sure you could make one much better than mine.
Well done on using such a technical form so well. Enjoyed reading it.
Thank you
Yeah. It was incredibly hard. I don’t think I could have thought up enough rhymes for a next verse. I’m still not so pleased with the verse second to last.
Reblogged this on shafiqah1 and commented:
Gman, what an inter-galatically awesome Villanelle! I have been working on one recently, and it is taking forever. I write them often, it was Dylan Thomas who made me obsessed with the form
Thanks for the reblog and the comment! “Intergalactically awesome villanelle”- I like that
Goodness. I friggin loved this! I’ve only written 3 villanelle and love writing them. This one was amazing. Awesome work.
Thank you
I’d love to see your villanelles. Are they on your blog? Can you send me the links?
Sorry..just saw this…yep, they have a category of their own on my blog. If you do stop by, hope you enjoy them.
Awesome! I’ll have a look!
Just read your Villanelles. Especially like Villanelle 1!
Appreciate that…I’m feeling very villanelle-esk…may be doing one today in fact…it’s the cool weather, makes me want to wrap myself in words. Have a great day.
Ooh. i look forwards to seeing it!
I absolutely love Villanelles, and I guess the way i build them makes it an easy form to me haha. Write them all the time. But I totally loved yours! I don’t believe this is your first one, totally trying to pull my leg, aren’t ya
Ha ha! No. It is honestly my first one. I did it for my poetry project, which includes writing a poem, writing about what that form of poetry is, and picking a classic from a load of that form of poem to use. So, assuming we started at the same time as usual, I probably only took two hours on it too
Haha nice. what classic did u choose? The first one i ever read that made me start writing/learn what a villanelle was is “If I Could Tell You” by W.H Auden. Check it out if u ever get the time.
The classic I chose was “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas. I’ve never heard of the poem you’ve mentioned. I’ll go check it out.
Thanks for your comment!
That’s a good, or great, one too lol. Anytime
Wow. Enough said. Wow. Nice job, Wonderful poem.
Thank you! Do you think you’ll have a go at making one
Absolutely. You do.
